“The study group here was started about 1971 by someone sent by Mr. Murphy, the leader of the Divine Science Church”, recalls Joan Stam. “He left and we continued with the group. That’s been over 30 years now.”  Joan never had the opportunity to formally study SOM, but says, “My parents came into this way of living when I was a teenager and we have always tried our best to live by these teachings.”

Her group is “small, but very keen to learn and live by Ernest Holmes’s teachings. We have had quite a few people over the years come for awhile and leave, hopefully to continue to live by what they have learned.” Joan works full time as the accountant in a building business owned by her brother and herself, so there is not much time to expand their group. Their classes are held “on a casual basis, which is very acceptable to those who attend.”  They use tapes as lessons, mainly by Dr. Ernest Holmes, Dr. William Hornaday, and Dr Frank Richelieu.

Australia is the sixth largest country in the world, but it has the least population density with only 2 people per square kilometer. Rich in natural resources, it has beautiful scenery and exotic plant and animal life. Perth is the capital of Western Australia and is home to about 2 million people. Its great weather, fabulous beaches, numerous waterways, and green parks make it a great place to live. The city is nestled between the Swan River and the Darling Range with its rolling hills, waterfalls, forests, and excellent bushwalking, especially during wild flower season. The Swan Valley has some of the best wineries in the world. Perth is a multi-national, multi-cultural, sophisticated and scenic city. Joan says, “It’s very beautiful. The climate is good and it is the best place on earth.”

When asked if they needed anything to support their work, Joan declined, saying, “We are using Science of Mind. We’re happy just the way we are.”
